Get ready for the 6th Absolutely Free Garage Sale (AFGS)!    The date is Saturday, August 11th.  The time is 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  The date to drop off your gently used “stuff” start Sunday, August 5thafter church to Friday, August 10th.

What is the history of the AFGS?

Zion had the first ever AFGS in 2007 followed by events in 2009, 2012, 2014 and 2016.  The event was originally brought to Zion by the Evangelism Board who wanted to host an event that would happen “on the front lawn” of Zion to intrigue our neighbors, serve the community and increase recognition of Zion as the “Absolutely Free” Church  (Zion had given away chap stick, hot coffee, water, free prayers and free car wash over the years.).

What exactly happens?

Imagine if you will….. A beautiful morning dawns on Saturday, August 11.  082The MMC is stuffed with 30 white tables running the length of the MMC full of Women’s Clothes, Books, Games, etc.    At 9:00 a.m., 75 Zion members meet at 9:00 for prayer and last minute preparations in the MMC wearing their Zion t-shirts as a handful of welcoming Zion members are serving coffee and visiting with the people who came early outside in the morning sun.  The double doors swing open at 9:45 a.m. and the overly full tables are carried out into the side driveway and circle drive.  Tents are set up with colorful balloons and streamers.  Upbeat worship music is playing from a big speaker.

Knowing that we only have 2 hours to intentionally connect with our guests and make them feel loved, Zion members are stumbling over each trying to be the first to help.  You hear things like…. “How can I help you?”  “What size are you looking for?”  “Can I carry that to the car for you?” 064“How can I pray for you?”    By 11:00, most of the stuff is gone but people are still milling around.  Because we don’t want empty tables, we start compiling the stuff on fewer and fewer tables until noon.  The kids are playing with the free toys in the newly enlarged grass yard as their parents hang out in the food tent with a pile of their stuff.  By 12:30, there are still a few late comers but mostly everything is gone.  The leftover stuff is packed up ready to donate to another organization that helps people and we start taking down tents and getting ready for church the next day. 068

We go home tired but happy and think of the faces of God’s children who were our guests for the morning and the stories they shared.

What is the goal of the AFGS?

Very simply… when guests drive away, they are all warm and fuzzy inside because they felt loved and valued, not only by the free stuff but by the love Zion members have shown them.

What can I do to help the Absolutely Free Garage Sale be a stunning success this year?

  1. First and foremost, join your fellow Zion member to pray for good weather, God’s presence to show up in a real way, and for our guests to see and feel God’s love so they remember this that feeling for a long time.  God will do big things if we invite Him!
  2. Set aside Saturday, August 11thfrom 9 to 1 to come be part of the fun!
  3. Plan now to drop off your clean and gently used “stuff” the week of August 5th.
  4. And lastly, sign up to donate food, drinks, etc. on the sign up sheet in the atrium.

May God bless you richly for your generosity!
